Studio PC Part 2

Here is the latest progress report:

  • Install 2nd (20gb) HD just for audio data – DONE.
  • Install DVD Drive – DONE.
  • Complete Power Amp Build and hook up – DONE.
Still to do:

  • Send back the 1gb of RAM I got off ebay. (Machine only sees half of it). So right now, I am running 640mb.
  • Figure out video issues with video playback. Everything seems to work fine, but playback of any video material (i.e. youtube, or DVD) performance is terrible!
  • Start recording some music.

re-building the studio PC

The old PC that I was using for music finally died. Therefore I re-building the heart of "No Budget Studios" with parts from another old PC. This is in the hopes of finally getting back into some recording, maybe some original material. So far it consists of:
  • Celeron 1.3Ghz – Overclocked to 1.7GHz
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Sonar 4 XL Home Studio
  • Line 6 DI-S USB interface with Gearbox and POD farm plug in

I still need to:

  • Hook up and configure second hard drive
  • Install DVD drive
  • Finish building the power amp, so I can hook up the Alesis studio monitors
  • Actually start using it!
Let’s see how I do…

Wraping up the season…

Next weekend marks the last gig of the year for Divided by Zeros. After that, we go back into heavey rehersal mode with a list of new songs. We are also loosing our hot keyboard player and picking up a new one. Should be interesting…

First Post in a long time…

So I have been thinking about what to do with this space. I haven’t posted on it for a few months. I wasn’t sure how many people actually read it. In fact I am pretty sure more people see what I post on facebook on a daily basis than what I would post here.

However, facebook does have it’s limitations, and this blog site is free. Something to take seriously in this day and age.

I have been thinking about creating some more guitar instruction/guitar zen type content, and FB probably isn’t the proper place for that.

We will see what comes up. As you can see I have "hidden" a bunch of the modules that used to load on the page, and if I decide to keep this thing, will probably hide the rest soon.

Stay tuned…

Turns out, I just might be addicted to Facebook, and the Mob Wars game…

Of course, there is a free app on the Apple App Store for the iPhone that let’s you view and update your Facebook status, right from your phone. Once you have a few friends on there that also post. You are addicted. Just like that.

That just might explain my complete lack of attention to this page. Bummer.

N-Tune onboard tuner

Just in time for the holidays. I got an N-Tune onboard tuner installed on my ESP. Holy crap this this thing is great! No more hunting for the tuner. No more having to use the one on your pedal board or Multi-effects unit.

This thing is sweet. Once you get one, you have ZERO excuse not to be in tune.

Check it out. Tell them I sent you.

In the meantime. Check me out on facebook. Send me a friend request. Send me a Mob Wars request to join your mob!

Here’s the thing…

I got this iPhone, and I am loving it.

Apple, (and now Google) have basically made Microsoft its bitch in the mobile phone space. Think about it. 3 years ago, in the smart phone space it was Windows Mobile, and RIM. At that time, RIM was starting to feel the heat from MSFT, they were just about on their way out. Then Apple launches the iPhone. People freak out. It sells like crazy. Anything interesting come out of Microsoft to challenge it? Not exactly. I mean, I picked up the T-Mobile Shadow the month it came out. It is a very cool phone. Plus it syncs with my Exchange (work) mail, has a keyboard (albeit the 20 key one, but much better than the standard phone keypad), nice screen, small size. Basically cool.

Then Apple launches the iPhone 3G, and now it supports sync with Exchange Mail. See, the the Apple dudes did a licensing deal with MSFT for the ActiveSync integration. Everyone else freaks out, and buys one. (that is unless you are a Microsoft employee)

Still nothing from Microsoft. Not a peep. Sure there is a Windows Mobile 6 to 6.1 upgrade on some phones, but that’s about it. The HTC touch? Yea, right. The touch diamond, or the diamond HD? Now you are talking. oh, wait. They aren’t available here (in the US) yet. WTF?

Then, in less than 12 months from announce to ship, Google (with T-Mobile) ships the G1, based on Android, Google’s open source mobile OS.  Sure, it has issues, and it still doesn’t support Exchange mail. However, as soon as it does, game over Windows Mobile.

The insane thing is that the Windows Mobile group at Microsoft is about the same size as the team that shipped Windows XP! So that of course begs the question: What exactly have you been doing the past 2 years!?

The collective has gained another member…

Meaning, like many of my friends, I got an iPhone.

I am finally one of the cool kids again.

However, I can also say that I got it on "my terms", meaning I didn’t sell my soul and switch to ATT&T, like Apple wants you to do.

I got a great deal on a used 2G, and hacked it using QwickPwn to run on the T-Mobile network. You can find a good walk-through on how to do it HERE.

The person I acquired the phone from, had already updated it to the latest firmware version, then factory reset it. This means that it needed to be "activated" again. Ugg.

However, after about 30min, the phone was bent to my will and happily running my T-Mobile SIM.

Take that, Steve Jobs!
